What Width Should a Leather Dog Collar Be?
Dog collar width is easy to overlook. Most buyers focus first on neck size, color, or style, but the width of a leather dog collar also affects how much material sits around the dog's neck and the overall proportions of the collar.
This is why Saddle Online Shop / TOMAR'S does not use one collar width for every size. Our leather dog collars increase in width from 3/4" for Small to 1" for Medium and 1.25" for Large.
The important point is that collar width and neck size are related decisions, but they are not the same measurement. First determine the correct neck fit, then consider the width built into that collar size.
Our Leather Dog Collar Widths
Our three collar sizes use the following widths:
- Small: 3/4" wide
- Medium: 1" wide
- Large: 1.25" wide
We increase the width gradually rather than making every collar from the same-width leather strap.
A collar is something the dog actually wears around its neck, so the physical dimensions of the collar deserve more consideration than simply producing one universal design in different lengths.
Why Not Make Every Dog Collar 1 Inch Wide?
A universal 1-inch collar would certainly simplify production, but production simplicity is not the only consideration.
On a smaller neck, the same width occupies a greater proportion of the available neck area. On a larger neck, that same width represents a smaller proportion.
That is why our Small collar uses a narrower 3/4-inch strap, the Medium moves to 1 inch, and the Large increases to 1.25 inches.
The goal is not to make a collar as wide as possible. It is to keep the collar dimensions appropriate to the size category.
3/4-Inch Leather Dog Collars
Our 3/4-inch leather dog collar is used for the Small size.
This keeps the amount of leather around a smaller neck more proportional while still using the same substantial buffalo leather construction as the larger sizes.
Our Small collar fits approximately a 5"–8" neck.
Do not choose the Small collar simply because your dog looks small. Measure the actual neck first because dogs of similar body size can have different neck measurements.
1-Inch Leather Dog Collars
Our Medium collar uses a 1-inch width.
This provides the middle step in the lineup and corresponds with an approximate 8.5"–11.25" neck fit range.
One inch is a common-looking collar proportion, but that does not mean every dog should automatically wear a 1-inch collar. For our system, it belongs specifically to the Medium size.
1.25-Inch Leather Dog Collars
Our Large collar increases to 1.25 inches wide and fits approximately an 11"–13.75" neck.
The wider strap gives the Large collar different proportions from the Small and Medium versions rather than simply extending the length of a narrower collar.
Again, width does not determine fit by itself. The dog's neck measurement still determines whether the Large size is appropriate.
Collar Width Is Not Collar Thickness
These two specifications are often confused.
Width is the measurement across the face of the collar. Depending on size, ours is 3/4", 1", or 1.25".
Thickness describes the depth of the leather itself. Our collars use 3.5 mm+ buffalo leather.
A 1.25-inch-wide collar is therefore not 1.25 inches thick. Likewise, saying that a collar uses 3.5 mm leather tells you nothing about how wide the strap is.
Understanding both measurements gives you a much clearer picture of the actual product.
Should a Bigger Dog Always Wear a Wider Collar?
Not automatically.
Dog weight or breed alone should not be used to select a collar. Neck circumference is the more useful starting measurement, followed by the dimensions and fit range of the actual collar.
A broad-looking dog may not have the neck measurement you expect, while two dogs of the same weight can require different collar sizes.

Should a Small Dog Always Wear the Narrowest Collar?
The same principle applies in the opposite direction. Do not select a 3/4-inch collar simply because a dog belongs to a breed generally considered small.
Measure first. If the dog's neck falls within a different collar's actual fit range, use the measurement rather than a breed assumption.

Does a Wider Collar Mean a Stronger Collar?
Width by itself is not a reliable measure of the strength or quality of a finished dog collar.
A collar should be evaluated as a complete product. Important factors include:
- Leather material and thickness
- Collar width
- Stitching and construction
- Buckle and other hardware
- Attachment areas
- Correct sizing and adjustment
- Condition of the collar during use
Simply making a strap wider does not compensate for poor leather, weak hardware, damaged stitching, or incorrect fit.
Our 3.5 mm+ Buffalo Leather Construction
While collar width changes according to size, the core material remains 3.5 mm+ buffalo leather.
Our collars also use hand-stitched construction and nickel roller buckles.
This lets us change the proportions of Small, Medium, and Large collars without changing the fundamental material specification behind the lineup.

Does Tooling Change the Collar Width?
No. Tooling is a style choice, not a sizing system.
Our core collar styles are:
- Plain / Simple Border Tooled
- Basket Tooled
- Floral Tooled
Choosing Basket Tooled instead of Plain does not mean the dog needs a wider collar. The collar width is determined by the Small, Medium, or Large construction.

Should the Dog Leash Match the Collar Width?
No, and this is an important distinction in our dog gear system.
The collar is worn around the dog's neck, so we change its width according to collar size. The leash performs a different job and spends much of its working time in the owner's hand.
Our standard leather leash therefore remains 3/4" (6/8") wide, even when paired with a 1-inch Medium collar or 1.25-inch Large collar.
This means:
- Small 3/4" collar can pair with a 3/4" leash
- Medium 1" collar can pair with a 3/4" leash
- Large 1.25" collar can pair with a 3/4" leash
The products coordinate without requiring identical widths.

Do not shop for collar width in isolation. Build the decision in the correct order:
- Measure the dog's actual neck.
- Find the appropriate collar fit range.
- Confirm the width associated with that size.
- Consider the 3.5 mm+ buffalo leather construction.
- Choose Black, Brown, or Tan.
- Select Plain / Border, Basket Tooled, or Floral Tooled.
