How to Build a Matching Leather Dog Collar and Leash Set
A matching leather dog collar and leash set should do more than share the same color. The collar needs to fit the dog's neck correctly, while the leash needs practical dimensions and a comfortable feel for the person holding it.
That is why Saddle Online Shop / TOMAR'S treats the collar and leash as two related products with different sizing requirements. Our leather dog collars are sized for the dog, while our leather leash uses one standard length and width designed around everyday handling.
The result is a coordinated setup without forcing the leash dimensions to change every time the collar size changes.
Start With the Leather Dog Collar
The collar is the size-specific part of the setup because it is worn directly around the dog's neck.
Our leather dog collars are available in three sizes:
- Small: approximately 5"–8" neck | 3/4" wide | 12.5" overall leather length
- Medium: approximately 8.5"–11.25" neck | 1" wide | 15" overall leather length
- Large: approximately 11"–13.75" neck | 1.25" wide | 17.5" overall leather length
Do not select Small, Medium, or Large based only on breed or weight. Measure the dog's actual neck where the collar normally sits.

Then Choose the Collar Style
Once the size is established, you can choose the appearance without compromising fit.
Our core collar lineup is built around three leather styles:
- Plain / Simple Border Tooled: clean leather with understated border detail
- Basket Tooled: repeating traditional Western tooling
- Floral Tooled: more decorative Western-inspired leather tooling

Choose the Matching Leash by Color, Not Collar Width
This is where collar and leash sizing separate.
A Medium collar is 1 inch wide and a Large collar is 1.25 inches wide because those dimensions help establish the proportions of a product worn around the dog's neck.
The matching leash does not need to copy those widths. The leash spends much of its working time in the owner's hand, so grip, handling, finished length, hardware, and leather construction become important design considerations.
Our standard leather leash uses a 3/4" (6/8") width regardless of whether it is paired with a Small, Medium, or Large collar.

Why We Use a 6 Ft Leather Dog Leash
Our standard leash measures 6 ft finished overall from end to end. That measurement includes the snap on the dog end and the handle loop on the owner end.
We selected six feet as a general-purpose length because it provides more walking room than a 4 ft leash without turning an everyday leash into a long training lead.
The leash remains the same length whether it is paired with a Small, Medium, or Large collar. A larger dog does not automatically need a longer leash, just as a smaller dog does not automatically need a shorter one.

Black Leather Dog Collar and Leash
A Black leather dog collar and leash creates the darkest and cleanest combination in the lineup.
The plain Black leash can coordinate with a Black Plain / Border Tooled, Basket Tooled, or Floral Tooled collar. This gives you the ability to choose the collar design independently while keeping the leash simple.
Brown Leather Dog Collar and Leash
A Brown leather dog collar and leash gives the setup a traditional leather appearance that works naturally with Western styling.
Brown can be paired across all three collar designs while the leash remains plain. This keeps the two products visually connected without covering both pieces in the same tooling.
Tan Leather Dog Collar and Leash
A Tan leather dog collar and leash creates the lightest combination in the core lineup.
Tan can make the tooling on the collar especially visible, while the plain Tan leash keeps the overall setup from becoming overly decorative.
Does the Leash Need the Same Tooling as the Collar?
No. Matching does not require every surface detail to be identical.
Our approach is to let the collar carry the decorative leatherwork while keeping the leash plain. A Basket Tooled Brown collar can therefore pair with a plain Brown leash, and a Floral Tooled Tan collar can pair with a plain Tan leash.
This creates a coordinated set based primarily on leather color while allowing the collar to remain the visual centerpiece.
Why We Don't Sell Small, Medium and Large Leash Widths
Creating three leash widths simply because there are three collar sizes would add choices without necessarily improving the setup.
The products perform different jobs:
- Collar size: determined by the dog's neck measurement
- Collar width: changes with Small, Medium, and Large sizing
- Leash length: determines working distance between dog and handler
- Leash width: affects handling and the amount of leather in the owner's hand
- Color: creates the visual connection between collar and leash
Keeping these decisions separate makes it easier to choose each product for its actual function.
Our Leather Dog Collar Construction
Our core collars are made from 3.5 mm+ buffalo leather with hand-stitched construction and nickel roller buckles.
Natural buffalo leather can show differences in grain and texture from one piece to another. These variations are part of the character of genuine leather rather than the perfectly uniform appearance associated with synthetic materials.

- Choose Small, Medium, or Large according to the neck-fit range.
