Choosing the right leather dog collar starts with your dog's actual neck measurement. Small, Medium, and Large labels alone do not tell you whether a collar will fit correctly. You also need to understand the collar's neck-fit range and leather width.
Saddle Online Shop / TOMAR'S leather dog collars are available in three sizes. Each size has its own adjustable neck range and collar width, allowing you to choose the size based on your dog's measurement rather than breed or weight alone.

Leather Dog Collar Size Chart
- Small: Fits approximately 5"–8" neck | 3/4" wide | 12.5" overall leather length
- Medium: Fits approximately 8.5"–11.25" neck | 1" wide | 15" overall leather length
- Large: Fits approximately 11"–13.75" neck | 1.25" wide | 17.5" overall leather length
Use the neck-fit range as your primary sizing measurement. Overall leather length describes the physical length of the collar and should not be confused with the dog's neck circumference.
Small Leather Dog Collar
The Small leather dog collar fits approximately a 5"–8" neck. It is 3/4" wide and measures approximately 12.5" in overall leather length.
The narrower 3/4-inch width keeps the collar proportioned to the Small size. Before choosing Small, confirm that your dog's actual neck measurement falls comfortably within the 5"–8" adjustment range.
Medium Leather Dog Collar
The Medium leather dog collar fits approximately an 8.5"–11.25" neck. It is 1" wide and measures approximately 15" in overall leather length.
Medium changes both the adjustment range and the width of the collar. It is therefore not simply a longer version of the Small collar.
Large Leather Dog Collar
The Large leather dog collar fits approximately an 11"–13.75" neck. It is 1.25" wide and measures approximately 17.5" in overall leather length.
The wider 1.25-inch leather gives the Large collar different proportions from the Medium and Small sizes. This width difference becomes especially important when your dog's measurement falls close to the Medium/Large overlap.
Neck Size vs Overall Collar Length
Neck size and overall collar length are two different measurements.
Neck size is the circumference around your dog's neck where the collar normally sits. Overall leather length is the physical length of the collar from the leather at the buckle end to the leather tip.
For example, our Medium collar has an overall leather length of approximately 15 inches, but it is designed for a neck measuring approximately 8.5"–11.25". A 15-inch overall collar does not mean it is intended for a 15-inch neck.
For ordering, always compare your dog's neck measurement with the stated neck-fit range.
Why Collar Width Changes With Size
A leather dog collar is worn around the dog's neck, so width is part of the sizing decision. Instead of using the same strap width for every size, our collar width increases as the size increases.
- Small: 3/4" wide
- Medium: 1" wide
- Large: 1.25" wide
This allows the collar's proportions to change with its intended size range rather than simply making the same width of leather progressively longer.
What If Your Dog Falls Between Medium and Large?
The Medium and Large adjustment ranges have a small overlap:
- Medium: approximately 8.5"–11.25"
- Large: approximately 11"–13.75"
If your dog's neck measures approximately 11"–11.25", both sizes may fall within the stated adjustment range. This is where collar width becomes particularly useful when making the decision.
Medium is 1 inch wide, while Large is 1.25 inches wide. Consider your dog's build, where the measurement falls within each adjustment range, and which collar width is better proportioned for the neck.
Do not automatically move to Large simply because your dog reaches the bottom of the Large range.
Should You Choose Dog Collar Size by Breed?
Breed can provide a rough idea of size, but it should not replace an actual neck measurement. Dogs of the same breed can differ in build, age, coat thickness, body condition, and neck circumference.
The same applies to body weight. Two dogs weighing the same amount do not necessarily have the same neck measurement.

That means the sizing decision is primarily about finding the correct neck-fit range and appropriate collar width rather than choosing between different grades of construction.

Color and tooling can make a leather collar distinctive, but fit should come first. Measure your dog's neck, choose the appropriate size, and then select the appearance you prefer.
